Morin dit Valcourt
The Morin dit Valcourt Family was rooted very early in Canada.
From the first priest ordained in New France, to the first to take her vows as a nun, to the first European child claimed to be born there, there is much to be proud of.
Noel MORIN was born about 1609 in St. Etienne, v.brie-Compte-Robert, en Brie, Paris, France. His place of birth or origin is written in several different formats. St-Etienne, v. Brie-Comte-Robert,Archev. Paris, Brie (ar. melu,seine-et-marne)
He appeared in the census about 1666 in Quebec, British America. He was in Wheelright and cartmaker. In 1663, he became the Lord of St. Luc.
The Valcourt Family are pictured above. Seated are (I believe) Desire’s wife, Antoinette holding their son Paul. Antoinette and Desire were the first of the siblings to marry. This would put the photo sometime after Paul’s birth in 1918. Also seated is Jean Felise Valcourt. Standing left to right are Desire, Priscille, either Charles or Wilfred, a cousin living with them at the time, and, once more, either Charles or Wilfred.

Noel Morin was married to Helene DesPortes. This was her second marriage. Her first husband, Guillaume Hebert, was killed by the Iroquois.
Helene was baptized about 1620 at Notre-Dame-de-Quebec in Québec City. There is no specific record for her birth and baptism as the church itself bunt several times. It is assumed that she was born in Québec after the seventh of July 1620, which is the date her godmother, Helene Boulle, wife of Samuel de Champlain, arrived in Québec. She was likely born in the second half of 1620. She died on 24 Jun 1675. The burial date of Helene is not known, not having been found, but a note found in the register of Sainte-Famille indicates she died at the house of her son, Alphonse, at St.Thomas de La Riviere-Du-Sud.
She was a “Sage Femme” which is a midwife. She is reported to have learned this from her maternal aunt, Marguerite Langlois, wife of Abraham Martin of the Plains of Abraham. She is also reported to be the first child born of French parents in New France.
Noel died on 10 Feb 1680 at the age of 71 at St. Thomas in Montmagny, Quebec, British America. He was buried on 15 Feb 1680 at Notre-Dame-de-Québec in Québec City, British America. Noel was seventy-five years old when he died at the house of his son, Alphonse Morin who lived at La Pointe a La Caille. He was buried five days later in the cemetery of Notre-Dame-de-Québec.
