Cyr

Pierre Cyr arrived in Acadia about 1668, possibly after the signing of the Treaty of Breda ( 11 July 1667), but before the arrival of Hector d”Andigne, Sieur de Grandfontaine ( 5 August 1670).

The reasoning for this thought is that Acadia was occupied by the English between 1654 and 1667, so no there were no Frenchmen moving there at that time.

The census of early 1671 indicates that Pierre was living there at the time, having married a local girl and that they had a 3 month old son, so he would have most likely arrived prior to August of 1670.

He was the first Sire to arrive in Acadia. It is said that most Cyrs in North America are descendants of his through his three sons, Jean, Pierre and Guillaume.

The picture on the right is Marie Lord Belleau and Daniel Desire Cyr. There are very few pictures of this family available. It is possible that this is their wedding picture, but that is not certain.

Pierre Sire ( Cyr) was born about 1644 in France. He died about Apr 1679 at the age of 35 in Beaubassin, Acadie, Canada. Pierre was buried in 1741 in Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia.

There is a lot of speculation about where Pierre Cyr came from. One thought is that he was born Touraine-En-Loire-France, but this has not been proven as a fact.

Many sources report he came to Acadia as an ” Armurier”, which is a gunmaker. He may have had a connection to the military, but that also has not definitely been proven.

In the 1671 census it states the following:  Gunsmith-Pierre Sire, 27 years of age, his wife Marie Bourgeois 18 years of age, their child a boy named Jehan 3 months. Their livestock eleven cattle and six sheep, no land under cultivation.

A short while after the 1671 census, Jacques Bourgeois, who was also involved with the fur trade, moved all of his family to Cumberland Basin also known as ” Chignecto”. Pierre and his family were part of that move. The Bourgeois settlement was later renamed ” Beaubassin”.
