Hebert
Our first Hebert ancestor to arrive in Acadia was Estienne, also known as Etienne Hebert. Records indicate that he did not come alone but likely at the same time as his brother, Antoine Hebery, who married Genevieve Learn about 1648.
Although many claim to know his parentage and where he came from, this has not been established as fact and is only conjecture.
Estienne Hebert married Marie Gaudet about 1650 in Acadie. He was deceased at the time of the Port-Royal Census done in 1671.
At the time of the census, his widow, Marie Gaudet, had 10 children, Marie, Marguerite, Emmanuel, Estienne, Jean, Francoise, Catherine, Martin, Michel and Antoine. She also was listed as having had 4 horned animals, 5 sheep and 3 acres of land in value.
From the census, we know that Estienne’s youngest child was listed as one year old, so he was born in 1670 or late 1669 depending on the actual date of the census. Estienne likely died somewhere between March 1669 to before the census of 1671.
Odilon Hebert is pictured here with his wife, Marie Roy and their family.
The two older sisters, Regina and Melina, are not in this picture. Diana is in the back row with her brothers, Aime, Louis and Leon. The younger siblings in the front include Gerard, Alexandre and Adrienne.
