The first Lavigne to come to New France was actually Nicolas Rivard who was known as Nicolas Rivard Sieur De Lavigne.
Nicolas, along with his brother, Robert, had signed a contract to work for a period of three years at which time he could stay or return to France.
The photo on the right was a family celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary of Frederick Lavigne and Leda Eudoxie Savoie. They can be seen standing at the further end of the table.

Nicolas Rivard Sieur DE LAVIGNE was born on 16 Jun 1617, the son of Nicolas Pierre Rivard and Jeanne Mullard, in Tourouvre, Orne, France.
He was baptized on 16 Jun 1617 at St. Aubin in Tourouvre, ev. Chartres, Perche (ar. Mortagne,Orne). He immigrated in 1648 to Perche, France.
Nicolas arrived in New France about the 6th of Jun 1651. He lived in Trois Rivieres, Saint Maurice, Quebec in 1652. In 1682 he was a Captain of Militia at Batiscan in Batiscan, Champlain, Quebec.
Nicolas died on 1 July 1701 at the age of 84 in Batiscan, Champlain, Quebec. He was buried on 1 July 1701 at St. François Xavier in Batiscan, Champlain, Quebec. He was also known as Nicolas RIVARD.
Fichiers Origenes indicate that Nicolas was engaged to work under contract by Noël Juchereau (ct. 06-03-1648) when he arrived in New France). He was literate and able to sign for himself. His brother, Robert, also signed and arrived at the same time.
